A flexible workplace relations system that promotes greater efficiency in agreement making between employer and employee should be adopted to help harmonise the relationship between work and family.
Australian Employers play an integral part in the family lives of many Australians by supporting individuals with wages, by paying taxes, paying superannuation, supporting training and personal development.
Government has an important role in providing the community with essential family services. It cannot be left to Employers to fulfill the roles of Governments with regards to the welfare of individual families nor is it the responsibility of Business to make provision of such services- especially small to medium sized enterprises.
Employers and Employees need to adapt to workplace changes from time to time without necessarily incurring any cost to the enterprise. Introducing work and family measures into a workplace without adding further costs to the business would be the best way to continue employment and to increase job opportunities.
This means that an enterprise may seek the following:
1) An agreed variation to a working arrangement without any additional cost as a trade-off.
2) Any time not worked in order to accommodate the employees’ family commitments may be made up without any additional cost to the business.
3) To allow access to accrued leave and other entitlements to meet the employees’ request.
